Motorcycle Action Group

NW Region Annual General Meeting

Scarisbrick Village Hall

Sunday 7 November 2004

Present:  NC Observer John Thompson

22 members from around the NW region: Bruce Rothwell, Anthony Niland, Thomas Godwin, Nev Green, Billy Downs, Bill Green, Tony Cox, Tim Norris, Alan Smith, Ian Phillips, Hilda Birchill, Luke Hodges, Daryl Whitby, Lynda Pouncey, Shirley Hauxwell, Graeme Kenyon, Paul Mossman, Phil Shuker, Dave Pearson, Ian Wood, Liz Hargreaves, M Towler and DRR Mike Card.

1.                  Welcome address from Mike Card, Deputy Regional Rep.

2.                  Election of Chair: Paul Mossman (Wirral & Chester branch rep) was nominated and seconded to act as chairman for this meeting (M Card & G Kenyon).

3.                  Apologies: received from Tev Fleming, Regional Secretary.

4.                  Minutes of last meeting (16 Nov 03, The Albert Inn, Bolton) ratified by P Mossman.

5.                  Matters Arising: none.

6.                  Regional Report, M Card. Mike outlined a busy year during which he had appeared in the press and on TV making sure the biker’s voice was heard. He extended thanks to all those in the region who had helped to organise events and meetings; Billy Downs for arranging a venue for the regional AGM, Tony Cox for attending one of the NC meetings on his behalf and for organising the ‘Big One’ rally etc.

Mike had also received numerous phone calls and e-mails from people asking what he (i e MAG) was going to do about various bike problems. These enquiries came from non-members who expressed no interest in joining MAG.

7.                  Regional Accounts: Lynda Pouncey was delayed, but in her absence Mike was able to confirm that the region’s finances were healthy – thanks mainly to the profit from Blackpool MAG’s ‘Big One’ rally. Sums had been received from various other events. Lynda arrived shortly after the end of the meeting and was able to present the accounts to those present. She had also brought ‘Received with Thanks’ Certificates for local groups who had raised funds throughout the year. The accounts were checked by Graeme Kenyon and were declared to be in order. It was also agreed that the region would give £1000 to MAG Central.

8.                  Election of Officers: to avoid any delay or confusion in the proceedings, a list of nominees had been prepared, with the names of proposers and seconders.

Regional Rep:   Tony Cox      prop: M Card, sec: L Pouncey

Assistant RR:      Mike Card    prop: T Cox, sec: T Norris

Secretary:           Tim Norris       prop: M Card, sec: L Pouncey

Treasurer:            Linda Pouncey    prop: M Card, sec: T Cox

Auditors:             Graeme Kenyon and Mike Card

(prop: P Mossman, sec: T Cox)

WebMster:         Chris McDonald     prop: M Card, sec: B Green

All carried unanimously.  When Lynda was nominated as treasurer, Mike pointed out that she had done an excellent job in the past, and that before becoming treasurer she had been the longest-serving MAG regional rep.

9.                  Proposals: Ian Phillips asked whether the e-mail addresses for committee members could be made available. Mike C replied that it was normal practice for enquiries to be directed to the regional rep, using the e-mail address given in Streetbiker

Graeme Kenyon (seconded by Paul M) proposed that each branch should raise £100 for MAG by next March.

10.             AOB:

Mike C asked those present if they had heard about the AGM through word of mouth, listing in Streetbiker or the individual letter sent out to members. About half those present indicated that they had been alerted by the mailshot. This procedure (compulsory notification in writing) is an expensive option and was originally set up by Neil L, probably back in the days when MAG had more members and thus more money.

Phil Shuker informed people that he had been appointed as a Panel Solicitor for various MAG regions, and that he would be available to deal with legal enquiries for members. His details are carried in Streetbiker.

Tony Cox mentioned the Blackpool MAG Xmas party

Bill Green mentioned that Red Rose MAG will be holding a charity run in aid of T.H.O.M.A.S (drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre).

Luke and Tim reminded everyone that MAG and NABD were hosting a joint rock night at end of November.

One member suggested that we should use the meeting as an opportunity to arrange future events before people make their way home. One suggestion was to hold a Fred Hill memorial run; this could be tied in with a current protest issue of interest to bikers.

The MAG National AGC will take place on April 11, 2005, at Salisbury Cattle Market.

The next NW Regional AGM will be on November 6, 2005. As on this occasion, we plan to have an overnight party so that most of the members will be here for an early start – noon instead of 2.00.
